Humorous Interpretation (HI) is a speech event in which competitors perform a cutting from a published comedic work. Pieces may come from plays, novels, short stories, essays, or other written sources. The goal of HI is not just to be funny, but to tell a clear, engaging story through humor while demonstrating strong performance and interpretation skills.
While comedy is central to HI, effective performances are structured and intentional. Strong competitors focus on storytelling, pacing, and character development rather than relying solely on jokes or exaggerated behavior. Humor often comes from character relationships, contrast, and well-timed reactions. Controlled movement, clear transitions, and purposeful choices are typically more effective than constant physicality or overacting.
HI pieces frequently include multiple characters, requiring performers to clearly differentiate voices, physicality, and perspectives. Judges look for consistency and clarity in these character choices, as well as smooth transitions between them. A successful HI performance allows the audience to easily follow who is speaking and what is happening at all times.
Many of the strongest HI selections also include substance beneath the humor. While the piece may be comedic on the surface, it often touches on broader themes such as identity, family dynamics, social expectations, or personal growth. Performers should understand the full context of the original work and make cuts that preserve both the humor and the underlying message.
Overall, Humorous Interpretation rewards performers who combine comedic timing with thoughtful analysis. When done well, HI balances entertainment and clarity, allowing humor to enhance the story rather than distract from it.
