Joshua Walter is a senior at Jackson High School and a 2-year member and of the speech and debate team 1x State Qualifier in United States Extemporaneous Speaking.
International Extemporaneous Speaking (IX) is one of the two competitive events under the broader category of Extemporaneous Speaking, alongside United States Extemporaneous Speaking (USX). While USX focuses on domestic issues, IX centers entirely on world affairs (international conflicts, foreign policy decisions, global economic trends, humanitarian crises, etc).
In IX, competitors are given three questions related to current global events and select one to answer in a seven-minute speech. After drawing, each competitor receives thirty minutes to research, outline, and practice their speech using only approved online sources. No coaching or outside help is allowed during prep, and speeches must be delivered from memory, making the event both academically demanding and strategically challenging.
The questions asked in IX can range from “How should the EU respond to rising tensions in the Middle East?” to “Is global economic instability reshaping international alliances?” Because the topics shift quickly with world news, competitors must stay updated through credible international outlets like BBC World News, Reuters, and Al Jazeera. Successful IX competitors combine strong global awareness with the ability to explain complex issues clearly and confidently.
An effective IX speech includes a direct answer to the question, three analytical arguments supported by solid evidence, and a concise conclusion. Judges evaluate each competitor on their organization, analysis, use of sources, delivery, and the overall strength of their argument. IX rewards competitors who can think critically, synthesize information quickly, and communicate with clarity under pressure.
Ultimately, IX challenges students to become informed global thinkers. It pushes competitors to understand cultures, conflicts, and political systems far beyond their own. Participating in IX has strengthened my ability to analyze international issues, respond thoughtfully in high-pressure situations, and recognize how global events shape the world we live in.
